Sanaa Lathan has landed the leading role in an event series being developed by Fox. The untitled project is from Love & Basketball filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood and Empire executive producer Brian Grazer.
According to Deadline, the series examines the dangerous aftermath of a police shooting when an African American police officer kills a white teen in Tennessee. The drama had been in development at Fox for a while, and a pilot script has been completed. The network has followed up by ordering a bible with intentions of picking up the project straight to series once the bible is delivered.
[Sanaa] will star as an expert investigator who digs into the police shooting case, alongside a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice. The pair must navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such a volatile case as they seek justice before the divided town erupts in a race war.
The actress is coming off a lead role in the feature thriller The Perfect Guy, which debuted at No. 1 at the box office last month. Congrats Sanaa!
