I Am Not My Hair – India Arie
Gabby Douglas had just won gold in the women’s gymnastics all-around, and understandably, was on cloud nine.
The 16 year-old gymnast took to the the net shortly after making history, and can you imagine her shock and confusion when her google search results brought back people debating on her hair instead of talking about her accomplishment?
Although that had to be disappointing, thankfully Gabby is not letting that break her spirit. When asked about her hair critics Gabby responded;
“I don’t know where this is coming from.. What’s wrong with my hair? I’m like, `I just made history and people are focused on my hair?’ It can be bald or short, it doesn’t matter about my hair. I don’t think people should be worried about that. We’re all champions and we’re all winners. I just say that it’s kind of a stupid, and crazy thought to think about my hair.”
Gabby has worn the style for years to help keep her hair in place for competitions, and doesn’t plan on changing a thing.
“Nothing is going to change. I’m going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it.”
